URIBL doesn't check your sending domain or IP; it checks domains and URLs that appear inside the visible content of an email, such as links, tracking domains, and landing pages. This guide covers how URIBL works, what it means for your deliverability, and how to check and clear a listing.
URIBL (Uniform Resource Identifier Blacklist)
URIBL maintains a set of lists (the most impactful being black.uribl.com) that flag domains found inside the body of spam messages. It's used alongside other content-scanning tools like SpamAssassin, and functions similarly to SURBL, but is operated independently; a domain listed on one is not automatically listed on the other.
What URIBL Actually Checks
URIBL does not evaluate your sending domain or IP directly. It only applies when a spam filter scans an email's visible content and finds a link pointing to a domain on URIBL's list. If your sending domain isn't mentioned or linked in your email's visible content, which is standard practice, a URIBL listing shouldn't affect that domain's deliverability.
One thing worth knowing: a listing on black.uribl.com specifically is treated more severely than URIBL's other sub-lists, since some domain registrars use this data to place holds on or suspend a domain entirely, separate from any email deliverability impact.
Delist a Domain from URIBL
Verify Your Domain Listing
Check whether your domain is listed using the lookup tool at uribl.com/lookup, or another reputable blacklist checker.
Note which sub-list it appears on (e.g., black, red, grey).
Since uribl.com/lookup may also display SURBL results for convenience — these are separate lists, and a URIBL removal will not clear a SURBL listing, or vice versa.
Submit a Delisting Request
Fix the underlying cause first. URIBL will not disclose specific listing reasons.
Go to admin.uribl.com and register for an account. This is required before you can submit a delisting request; there is no anonymous or guest submission.
Once registered, use the same lookup form to submit your delisting request for the flagged domain.
Important Note: URIBL does not provide feedback on why a domain was listed and does not offer whitelisting by request. Processing can take several days, and you may need to demonstrate legitimate ownership and use of the domain as part of the review.
