Understand Spam Check Results

Understand your spam check results and take action to maximize your email deliverability

Written by Team Mailpool

The Spam Check provides a detailed analysis across multiple categories based on more than 150 checkpoints, giving you an overall deliverability score out of 100.

  • A deliverability score above 80 is considered good, meaning your emails are likely to land in the primary inbox.

  • A score below 55 indicates that immediate action is required to fix email deliverability issues.

Below is an explanation of each category checked by Mailpool.

Domain Blacklist Check

The system checks your domain against multiple blacklist providers to ensure it isn’t listed as a source of spam.

Possible statuses:

  • GOOD – No blacklisting issues

  • WARN – Partial blacklisting detected

  • BAD – Serious blacklisting issues

If your domain is blacklisted, you should contact the blacklist provider to request delisting.

IP Blacklist Check

The system checks your sending IP against multiple blacklist providers to ensure it isn’t listed as a source of spam.

Possible statuses:

  • GOOD – No blacklisting issues

  • WARN – Partial blacklisting detected (requires attention)

  • BAD – Serious blacklisting issues

If your sending IP is blacklisted, you should contact the blacklist provider to request delisting.

SpamAssassin Check

SpamAssassin is an open-source anti-spam platform that evaluates multiple factors to determine an email’s trustworthiness.

SpamAssassin score interpretation:

  • Below 5.0 (or negative scores) – The email is likely legitimate.

  • 5.0 or higher – The email is considered spam.

  • 10+ – The email is very likely spam.

If your SpamAssassin score exceeds 5.0, we recommend contacting our email deliverability team to assess your options.

SPF Check

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is an email authentication protocol that defines which mail servers are authorized to send emails on behalf of your domain.

Possible statuses:

  • GOOD – SPF is properly set up

  • BAD – SPF is not properly set up

If your SPF record isn’t properly configured, we recommend editing it or using Mailpool to register your domain, as we handle SPF setup automatically.

DKIM Check

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) is an email authentication protocol that attaches a digital signature to the email header.

Possible statuses:

  • GOOD – DKIM is properly set up

  • BAD – DKIM is not properly set up

If your DKIM record isn’t properly configured, we recommend editing it or using Mailpool, where we handle DKIM setup automatically.

DMARC Check

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) helps prevent domain spoofing by using SPF and DKIM.

Possible statuses:

  • GOOD – DMARC is properly set up

  • BAD – DMARC is not properly set up

If your DMARC record isn’t properly configured, we recommend editing it or using Mailpool, where we handle DMARC setup automatically.

Reverse DNS Check

Reverse DNS (rDNS) verifies that an IP address corresponds to a valid domain name.

Possible statuses:

  • GOOD – The rDNS check has been successful

  • BAD – The rDNS check failed

If the rDNS check fails, contact our email deliverability team for assistance.

Domain Age Check

Older domains generally show better deliverability than newly registered ones. However, recent studies indicate that a properly configured domain can achieve good deliverability regardless of age.

Possible statuses:

  • GOOD – Domain is older than 6 months

  • BAD – Domain is less than 6 months old

While domain age has minimal impact on deliverability, ensure that all other checks are positive.

Broken Links Check

A broken link (or dead link) is a hyperlink that no longer works and leads to a 404 error page. Broken links negatively impact deliverability.

Possible statuses:

  • GOOD – No broken links found in your email

  • BAD – At least one broken link was found in your email

If the Broken Links Check fails, review the URLs in your email, update them, and rerun the Spam Check.

Short URL Check

A short URL is a compressed version of a link that still redirects users to the original page (e.g., Bitly links). Using short URLs in emails negatively affects deliverability.

Possible statuses:

  • GOOD – No short URLs found in your email

  • BAD – At least one short URL was found in your email

If the Short URL Check fails, review and replace the shortened URLs, then rerun the Spam Check.
